About Catch Up: the AI summary bot for Slack

Catch Up summarizes Slack channels, threads, DMs and shared files with AI, so you can catch up without reading every message.

What is Catch Up?

Catch Up is a Slack app that summarizes conversations with AI. Mention @catchup in a channel, thread or direct message and it reads the messages from the period you choose (the last day by default, up to 60 days) and replies with a summary generated with OpenAI.

Everything happens inside Slack, so it works the same on Slack desktop, in the browser and on mobile. Want a weekly overview? Mention @catchup 7 to summarize the last 7 days.

Summaries highlight key decisions, deadlines and important discussions. On the Pro and Advanced plans Catch Up can also read files shared in the conversation, including PDFs, text files, images and CSV. In channels and threads the summary is only visible to you unless you add public; in a DM with the bot it summarizes your configured channels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about Catch Up. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to us on this email.
Is Slack’s Catch up feature available on desktop?
Slack's Catch up view, where you swipe through unread conversations one at a time, is part of the Slack mobile app. On desktop the same messages live in Unreads: click Unreads at the top of your sidebar, or press Cmd+Shift+A on Mac or Ctrl+Shift+A on Windows. Catch Up adds an AI summary on top: mention @catchup in any channel, thread or DM on desktop or mobile. Read the guide to Slack Catch up on desktop
How do I summarize a Slack channel?
Add Catch Up to the channel and mention @catchup. You get a summary of the last day that only you can see. Add a number to change the period, for example @catchup 7 for the last 7 days (1 to 60 days), or add public to post the summary for everyone in the channel. Can I summarize a Slack thread?
Yes. Mention @catchup inside the thread and Catch Up summarizes the entire thread. Use @catchup public to share the summary with everyone in the thread.
How is Catch Up different from Slack AI recaps?
Slack's built-in AI comes with Slack's paid plans, which are billed per user: conversation and thread summaries are included in Pro, and daily recaps in Business+ and Enterprise+. Catch Up is a separate Slack app billed per workspace from $10 per month with no per-seat fees, and on the Pro and Advanced plans you can add your own instructions to any summary and include shared files.
